How to Request an Interlibrary Loan

Squires Library provides access to books and journal articles unavailable in the university's own collection through interlibrary loans. If we do not have a resource you need, we will use the information you submit using the online request form to try and locate it at another library. FAQs about Interlibrary Loans

An Interlibrary Loan is a transaction in which library material, or a copy of the material, is made available by one library to another upon request.

Through interlibrary loan service, eligible borrowers may access material not owned by this Library. When you turn in an interlibrary loan request, Squires Library attempts to borrow or obtain a photocopy of the needed material from another library.

What type of materials are available?

The conditions of loan services are set by national, regional, and state codes as well as by policies of individual lending libraries. Books maybe loaned or you may request a copy of specific pages/chapter. Articles are copied from periodicals.

Most commonly available items:

  • Books
  • Articles from journals, newspapers, or magazines

Other types of items may not be available.

Items more difficult to get:

  • Books - published the same year as the request
  • Periodicals - whole volumes or issues
  • Audiovisual materials (phonograph records, CDs, cassette tapes, videos, software, photographs, film)
  • Bulky, fragile, or oversized materials that are expensive or difficult to pack
  • Rare material, including manuscripts
  • Genealogical and other similar materials
  • Dissertations (Many American and Canadian dissertations are only available by purchase.)

Not for Loan:

  • eBooks

How do I request interlibrary loan material?

The Lee University and Theological Seminary faculty, staff, and students may request interlibrary loan materials in the Reference Dept. of Squires Library. Other persons may request interlibrary loan materials at the Cleveland Public Library. First check for availability

Before requesting a loan, please check to be certain the item you want is not available at Squires Library. Note: Only items not available at this library may be obtained through interlibrary loan.
To locate books in Squires Library, check the online catalog.
To locate a particular periodical:
- Consult the full-text database list from the Library's homepage.
- Conduct a "journal title search" on the Library's online catalog.

To request a loan or article, complete the Interlibrary Loan Online Request Form.  (For instructions, see Username/Password instructions here, scroll to middle) You will be notified when the item(s) arrives. To pick up your Interlibrary Loan materials, bring your University/Library ID to the Circulation Counter.

How much does it cost?

Most of the time there is no charge to borrow books or to receive articles via interlibrary loan. For rare or difficult-to-obtain materials, the lending library may charge a photocopying or handling fee, which would then be passed along to you.

When can I expect materials?

Depending on the location of requested items and the method of delivery, materials usually arrive within two weeks. Journal articles that are available electronically may arrive in just a few days. Squires Library processes Interlibrary loan requests promptly.

How can I renew my Interlibrary Loan materials?

To renew your Interlibrary Loan books, you must email the ILL Coordinator at ill@leeuniversity.edu. The ILL  Coordinator will email you when the lending library approves renewal or denies renewal.

Journal articles do not need to be renewed or returned, but must be viewed and downloaded within 30 days of receipt.
